This month, the International Rescue Committee's crisis news roundup looks at Afghanistan’s hunger crisis and harsh winter, the gang violence driving Central Americans to the U.S. border, and the humanitarian impact of four years of war in Yemen.

The International Rescue Committee has been working in Pakistan since 1980. Within hours of the devastating earthquake on Oct. 8, 2005, IRC teams were on their way to the hardest hit areas to distribute emergency supplies and assist the survivors, with special emphasis on the needs of women and children.

An International Rescue Committee aid worker (his identity obscured for security reasons) takes us inside Areesha displacement camp, northeast Syria. Here 43,000 people who fled ISIS are crowded into a camp built for less than half that number.  Some 25,000 people are living on one piece of bread a day. Others have nothing to eat. The IRC is responding with emergency meals, which we have distributed to 5,000 families.

With over three million children under the age of five experiencing acute malnutrition annually, Afghanistan has faced a persistent hunger crisis that has remained at catastrophic levels for the last three years.
